I thought I should make a quick note for those who are planning to arrive in the UK in early 2009. we are reading news regarding deepening recession in the UK every day, thousands are job cut, businesses going bust, it all seems very scary.
I just want to make my opinion across you. I thought let me have a look how IT jobs are affected by this recession. According to a source, I found following IT job sector are less efected by recession:
- software design and development
- networking and systems administration
- software implementation analysis
- testing and QA
- database administration
There are lots of opportunities in:
- Virtualisation
- VoIP and wireless technologies
- Systems upgrade and maintenance
- Data warehousing and data analysis
- web 2.0 technologies
Dont just blindly believe what I have said above. Before you make any decision please check these:
- See how many jobs are available in your sector.
To find this, register at www.reed.co.uk, they show number of jobs available in the sector and number of applicants for each job. Less the applicant you have better chances to get job or you are in a niche market. - Regularly read or listen to the news about UK. Go to www.bbc.co.uk to see whats happening in UK.
- If you are earning good money in India this is not good time to come to the UK. 1 sterling pound is near indian rupee 70. Whereas euro is getting stronger against it. Think more before coming.
Finally I will just like to say for all those HSMP holders who are willing to arrive in the UK in january 2009 or early 2009, please do your home work. Do all your research before you come. Dont think if you come you will get some kind of job, think how prepared are you to do labour or non skilled jobs and availability of these jobs. Hundreds or thousands of people are there to do unskilled jobs therefore hourly pay is much less then legal wages. Think again, will you be able to live in UK with £2-3 an hour or you will be happy in your country (India) with earning Rs.30k or more? Choice is yours!!

Hello hiren,
I am a young man from Ukraine and going to apply for HSMP in a few weeks and in fact I work in IT. I strongly believe that the situation will change in the second part of 2009 and therefore the UK economy will be under rise again. Althought I must admit that for me it all does seem very scarry as for now. The fact that makes me go ahead and not to refuse to apply is that I have enough money to be unemployed in UK for some time and I don’t have the family to support. In my opinion even if worse comes to to the worst I will get valuable experience of living and doing some casual job in UK. At the same time for the money that I have already spent and I am going to spend for HSMP I could have bought some cheap car in my country which I haven’t had yet:). As for me, sometimes You have to risk if you want to be successfull.
Thanks for useful information
